Centre for Canadian Nuclear Sustainability

Community Partner

In January 2021 Women in Nuclear Canada became a Community Partner for the Centre for Canadian Nuclear Sustainability (CCNS), which is operated by Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

The launch of the Centre for Canadian Nuclear Sustainability will support work underway for Pickering Nuclear Generating Station decommissioning and create immediate jobs to benefit Ontario’s economy and attract suppliers and businesses to the region. The CCNS will also look for innovative collaboration opportunities with post-secondary, nuclear industry and vendor partners and form partnerships with community stakeholders, local businesses, organizations, Indigenous communities, skilled trades and the general public.

WiN Canada whole-heartedly supports the CCNS vision of adopting nuclear technology as the sustainable energy source for future generations. Their mission to bring the industry together to invest in our environment, community and economy through the advancement of innovative and sustainable nuclear lifecycle solutions, is aligned to WiN Canada.

With participation from the wider industry, the Centre will operate as a hub to:

  • Leverage and coordinate Ontario’s vast talents and competencies to make Canada a world leader in nuclear decommissioning
  • Advance innovative solutions for nuclear materials, with a continuing emphasis on minimizing the environmental footprint by reducing volumes, and diverting and recycling clean materials
  • Stimulate economic growth in Ontario using cross collaboration between organizations that will lead to the launch of projects and research and development opportunities
  • Collaborate by forming partnerships with the industry, community, local businesses, academia and Indigenous communities, as well as interprovincial and international organizations to discover research, development and export opportunities for innovative nuclear energy solutions
