Manitoba Chapter: A Day in the Life

Story 2: A Day in the Life of Jacey Herle, Security Compliance Specialist at the Whiteshell Laboratories

To celebrate International Women’s Month, the WiN Manitoba Chapter presents “A Day in the Life,” a closer look at professional women’s journey with CNL.

Nuclear security is a heavily regulated industry across Canada. To make sure that the Whiteshell Laboratories Restoration Project (WLRP) and everyone working on site comply with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations, a subject matter expert steps in – Jacey Herle is WLRP’s Security Compliance Specialist, and her job is to ensure employees meet regulatory obligations when it comes to security.

Why is Security Compliance important at CNL?

Jacey:  The work I do is critical to maintain the Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) license and to apply for future licensing renewals, granting continuation and success of CNL’s mission.

What do you like most about your job?

Jacey:  I have been in this role for five months now, and I am really enjoying learning so many new things. This job keeps my brain busy.

What is the most challenging part, on the other hand?

Jacey:  Becoming familiar with all the regulations in both the nuclear and security realms.

How did your career path get you here?

Jacey:  I was a stay-at-home mom for 12 years, then I started cooking at a little restaurant in Hadashville. From there, I became an equipment operator at a peat moss plant, then transitioned into an administrative assistant role with the same company. Then, I took a bunch of Human Resources (HR) training in school. After that, I joined CNL as an Administrative Assistant, before moving into my current role.

Can you give some advice to women pursuing careers in the nuclear industry?

Jacey:  I’d encourage everyone to give it a try! The worst-case scenario is that it doesn’t work out, but the best-case scenario is that it does, and you find a role you really enjoy!
